Product Review – Maybelline SuperStay Matte Ink Lip Color

I think I have a new favorite lipstick. I bought this last week in Lover (kind of a berry pink) and Poet (coral). Yesterday, I put Lover on around 11 AM, and it was still flawless when I took it off at 10:30 PM. It lasted through two meals, and I honestly think it would have lasted all night if I hadn’t taken it off. I never even had to touch it up.

The brush is a little weird at first, but it’s shaped well. The colors are great and pretty true to the color of the tube. I bought mine at ULTA for about $9.50 each, and I’d say they were well worth it. I would definitely recommend these to anyone who needs long-lasting lip colors, and I’ll be checking out more of the shades for sure.

New Year’s Resolutions You Can Keep

It’s January 11th, so why am I just now talking about New Year’s resolutions? Well, because let’s face it, if you had one, chances are, you’ve probably already cheated or dropped it. If you didn’t have one, here are a few you can drop when people ask you what yours was. They’re easy, and they won’t require much work on your part, but may help increase your self-confidence, which is always a good thing.

  1. Find a lipstick shade that makes you feel like you can take on the world. Whether it’s a rosy red, a deep wine, a playful pink, or even just a nude shade that makes you feel strong, I firmly believe there’s a lipstick shade out there for everyone. Now, I don’t where a ton of lipstick. Sometimes, I feel like I’m being too formal if I have lipstick on, so I wear gloss or chap stick instead. However, there are some days where I’m looking to kick ass and take names, and on those days, I reach for lipstick. If you haven’t found a lipstick color that gives you that feeling of empowerment, I challenge you to find one this year. Two if you’re feeling frisky.
  2. Moisturize your face more often. I’ve already talked about why moisturizer is important, but I’ll reiterate to save some time. Moisturizer keeps your skin hydrated, so it won’t overcompensate and produce too much oil. Your face won’t be as oily, your makeup will stay on better, and you won’t break out as much. Find a moisturizer that works for you, and try to use it at least once a day or every other day. You don’t have to spend a lot to find one that works, either. Mine is about $7 a bottle, and it’s lasted me a long time.
  3. Try a look that’s not in your comfort zone. I don’t mean you have to change your style completely. That’s terrifying, and unless you want to, I don’t recommend it. Your style is part of what makes you who you are. However, you may find something you like, so try things that make you a little nervous. Maybe you’re going out with your girls one night. Try a dark lipstick instead of a bright red or nude. Buy a piece of clothing that you think is super cute, but you’ve never worn anything like it before. No matter what it is, doing something outside of your comfort zone can be a real game changer, which is what New Year’s resolutions are all about.

What was your New Year’s resolution? If you try any of these out, I’d love to know how it goes! Make 2018 your year!

Product Review – NYX Butter Gloss in Angel Food Cake

I finally did it. I broke down and bought the lip gloss I’ve been eying for a couple of weeks. It wasn’t much of a sacrifice since it was only $5, but as I’ve said before, I’m lazy and try to avoid going to stores if I can help it. However, I can confidently say it was worth the trip. I love this lip gloss.

This lip gloss is perfect for everyday wear. It’s a medium nude pink that I think looks great with everything. It’s light, and the formula isn’t too sticky. It is very pigmented though, as you can see in the pictures, and I can wear it by itself, which I love. Plus, it’s not too shiny, so even you gloss skeptics out there might like it.

One thing I do dislike about it is that it dries out my lips some, so I definitely recommend putting on a colorless lip balm before applying. Of course, I am currently out of lip balm, so I don’t know that this would work for sure, but I imagine that it would. Anyone have any recommendations for some natural lip balms? I can’t seem to decide on one.

So far, this is my favorite everyday lip gloss I’ve found. I’ve worn it every day that I’ve worn makeup since I bought it, and it hasn’t let me down yet. You can get it at Target or Ulta among other places, and I’ve included the link below to get it on Amazon, just in case you’re like me and hate going into stores or don’t want to chance going to Target and coming out with $100 worth of things you don’t need.

Why Lip Gloss isn’t Just for High Schoolers

Lip gloss may seem juvenile, but with the advances made in recent years to increase pigments and longevity, lip glosses are no longer just for high schoolers. Lip gloss is great for lunch dates, every day wear, or even nights out where you’d rather wear bold eye makeup. Plus, lip glosses can help keep your lips moist, which is great for avoiding chapped lips in winter. Below are some lip glosses that can give you the powerful feel of wearing lipstick, without it being too thick or heavy.

One of my favorite glosses for evening wear is Moxie by BareMinerals in Maverick. It’s a rich reddish-brown that seems similar to the color of cinnamon candy. It also has a plumping agent that gives your lips more of a pouty appearance. It’s a little cold when you first put it on, but that’s just the plumping additive taking effect. Moxie is between $15 to $18 per color, and it works great by itself or as a topcoat to add some shine. You can find it at most makeup stores, or follow the link below to get it from Amazon.

Another gloss I like is Ulta’s Color Rush lip gloss in Olivia. It’s a medium pink color that’s great for every day wear. I actually wore it today when I met my husband for lunch. Because it is an Ulta brand product, you can only get it there, but they’re only $9, and currently, Ulta is running a promotion for buy 2 Ulta beauty products, get 2 free. With this deal, you can try out several colors, or get some other products to enhance your makeup routine, like a lip primer or some eyeshadow. The pigment on these are pretty rich, so I would wear it by itself.

NYX also has lip glosses with quite a few color options. They are $5 at Ulta, but I know you can get them at Target and Amazon, too. One color I’ve been looking to try is Angel Food Cake, but I haven’t gotten over to Ulta to test it out yet. It looks like a mauve color, which is my go-to color for fall and winter. I think mauve matches a lot, and I feel really empowered when I wear mauve lip products. You can get it in store or follow the link below to find it on Amazon.

While these glosses won’t work for every occasion, I do think they’re a great alternative for when lipstick feels to formal. Lip glosses have come a long way from the sticky, sparkly pink colors that they started as. Now, they’re available in a ton of colors that will complement any look. Let’s find better ways for adult women to add gloss to their makeup routines for those days where lipstick just seems like too much.

Holiday Party Makeup Guide

With the holidays in full swing, chances are, you’ve got at least one holiday party coming up. Whether it’s a work Christmas party, an ugly sweater party with friends, or a family get-together, it’s important to keep your makeup consistent with the party’s theme. Below are a few options that will look great, depending on how formal the gathering is.

Semi-formal Christmas Party

This year, my husband’s Christmas party for work is semi-formal. I’m planning to wear a long-sleeve, short black velvet dress with nude tights and flats. One of the great thing about little black dresses is that they give you more freedom for your makeup. Since black goes with everything, you don’t have to worry about your lip colors clashing with your dress. For a semi-formal affair, I suggest doing a deep red or berry-colored lipstick, a metallic eyeshadow, and a little darker blush than you would normally wear. You don’t want your eyeshadow to be too glittery, but a soft gold or silver will really make your eyes pop and dress up the whole outfit. For lip colors, you can choose from mauve, wine, deep red, or any other colors that will stand out, but still look professional. Either gloss or matte lip colors will work, but if there will be food and drink (which, is it really a party if there’s not?), I suggest matte, because matte lipsticks tend to stay on longer.

Ugly Sweater Party

Let’s face it, ugly Christmas sweaters are in. What’s more fun than digging through racks at Good Will to find the tackiest Christmas sweater you can find, pairing with jeans or leggings and cute boots, and partying with your friends? Since these tend to be more casual gatherings, I would go with a more natural look for your face and eyes, but dress it up with some red lipstick. Red lipstick can be formal or casual, and it’s great for a party like this, because it really adds to the festivities. Plus, it will look great in all those Instagram pictures you’ll be posting. For eyeshadows, choose matte nudes, rather than something sparkly. I like taupe and beige, but you can pretty much choose anything that won’t distract from the volume of your sweater.

Family Get-together

Family gatherings can be tricky, because it can be hard to know what the right attire is. I almost always choose nude lipsticks for family get-togethers, because if I don’t, inevitably someone will make a comment that I don’t care to hear, and the holidays are stressful enough as it is. My favorite nudes come from the NYX Lingerie Liquid collection, and they are only about $7 each. Corset is a little darker than I would normally wear, but I love the way it looks on me, and it would be great for a family party. While you may need to go nude on the lipstick, this doesn’t mean you can’t dress up your eyeshadow some. Mauves, browns, and deep violets are great eyeshadow colors to wear to family events, and they can be lightened easily, so you can get them to a shade where you feel comfortable. Don’t forget the contour and blush, because you know there will be family pictures at some point.

The most important thing to remember about these parties is have fun. Don’t stress too much about your makeup or what you’re wearing, because it’s all supposed to be a fun chance to dress up and do something a little different.

Holiday Gift Guide

Looking for a gift for a friend, coworker, family member, or maybe just a treat for yourself this holiday season? While it can be hard to choose makeup shades for other people, there are a few things that everyone will love. There are tons of makeup sets out there ranging anywhere from $15 to $50 and upwards. These sets include various items including eyeshadow palettes, lip colors, eyeliners, and other things that people love to use in their everyday beauty routines. My favorite place to get these is Ulta, because they almost always have sales and coupons available, and they’re easily returned if you don’t love them.

Another great thing that Ulta does around this time of year is their 5 for $5 sale. This sale is great to get stocking stuffers, and it includes items like bubble bath, bath bombs, lip colors, nail polishes, makeup remover wipes, and more. What’s great about these, is that you can buy for people who aren’t crazy about makeup, because there are so many things to choose from. I’m sure other places have deals like this, but I haven’t stumbled upon them yet.

One thing I really love is a good lip kit. I don’t wear lipstick often, but when I do, it makes me feel really empowered. I feel like I can take on the world. There are a lot of great lip kits available this time of year, with several different shades in one box.  This is perfect for gifts, because even if the recipient doesn’t use all the shades, she’s bound to find one or two that she loves. Plus, it gives her a reason to try something outside of her comfort zone, and she may find her new favorite shade because of it.

As far as brands go, I like NYX solid lipsticks and their lingerie liquid collection. The lingerie liquids are mostly neutral colors, but they last a long time, the shades seem really flattering on everyone, and they aren’t very expensive (around $7 per color). I really like Corset, Baby Doll, and Push Up for neutral shades. I’ve also had good luck with Stila lip colors. Ulta currently has an 8-piece gift set for $45, which looks like it includes some really great neutrals and winter shades.

If lip colors aren’t what you’re looking for, Ulta has a whole section of their website dedicated to holiday gifts. Their gift guide breaks it down by price point (gifts under $25, etc) , makeup type (lip colors, eyeshadows) , and even who you may be shopping for (friends, hostesses). It may not cover everything, but it’s a pretty good place to start if you’re stuck on what to get someone for the holidays. Don’t forget to treat yourself this holiday season, too. Shopping for everyone else is hard work, and you deserve a reward for getting it done.
