Product Review – Carli Bybel x BH Cosmetics 21 Color Eyeshadow and Highlighter Palette

I was really excited about this palette when I ordered it and rightfully so. I really like the colors included, albeit they’re a little pinker than I would have liked since I’m so fair. However, I think they actually work for me, so I’m not upset about it. It also has a good assortments of matte and shimmery eyeshadow, so I’ve got something for every occasion.

So far, the middle row of eyeshadows is my favorite. I want to use the bottom row and the two metallics at the very bottom, but I haven’t had a reason yet. I also love the wide highlighter on the left. I haven’t tried the right one yet, but the left one is a great color for me, it gives me a great shine, and it’s long-lasting.

Most of this palette lasts really well, actually. It wasn’t very expensive ($18), so I was a little nervous about the quality. However, with setting powder, it lasted me about 8 hours yesterday, and it was pretty warm outside. I haven’t tried it without setting powder.

Has anyone else tried this palette or other things from BH Cosmetics? What were your thoughts? I think I may look into some of their other stuff, since this worked out so well. They have a zodiac palette that looks neat, but I don’t really need another palette at the moment (nor do I have space for one!).

My May 2018 Ulta Haul

Last week, I purchased some new makeup from Ulta, and it hasn’t come in yet, but I’m very excited for it. In preparation for it to be here later today, I thought I’d let you guys know what I got, so you can hopefully look forward to some good reviews in the next few weeks. I’m very hopeful about the pieces in this shipment, and I think you guys will enjoy some of them, as well!

  • Dream Fresh BB Cream 8-In-1 Skin Perfector – I recently did a post about why I prefer to use BB cream instead of foundation in the summer, so I decided to try this one out. I like Maybelline’s Baby Skin Primer, so I think their BB cream might work well for me, too.
  • FaceStudio Master Chrome Metallic Highlighter – I ended up getting the NYX Wonder Stick, and it’s okay, but the highlighter isn’t very shimmery. I know some women like a matter highlighter, but I prefer to glow a little more, so I’m thinking this one may be more my speed.
  • SuperStay Matte Ink Lip Color – I actually got two of these, Lover and Poet. One of my best friends has Lover, and it looks really good on her. She’s been telling me for weeks how great these are, so I finally caved and bought a couple. I stayed with safer shades, since I was buying online, but it looked like they had a lot of really neat colors that I’d like to try out.
  • Fit Me Matte + Poreless Foundation – I’ve heard some good things about this foundation, so I thought I’d check it out. I like my current one, but I could use one with a little more coverage for some occasions, so hopefully this one will check that box. Plus, I needed to spend a little more to get free shipping and my free gift, so what the heck, right?
  • Carli Bybel Deluxe Edition 21 Color Eyeshadow & Highlighter Palette – I’m probably most excited about this. First, it was only $18, and it has a lot of colors that I think I can wear on a daily basis. Plus, it’s just a beautiful palette. I’ve never used any BH Cosmetics stuff,  but it looked like it had some good reviews. I’ll be sure to let you know how it goes.
  • 4-Piece MAC Gift Set – Because I spent $50 (which is what you need for free shipping, anyways), I got a free 4-piece gift set from MAC. I can’t remember exactly what it featured off the top of my head, and the listing isn’t available anymore, but I know it had a lipstick, a mascara, maybe a primer, and something else. I’ve never tried any MAC products, because they are so expensive, but I’m excited to see if they’re worth the hype.

With a $3.50 off coupon, I got all of this for $55.09, which I personally think is amazing for all of this. I can’t wait to play with it all and let you know how everything is working. What are your favorite pieces from recent beauty hauls?

Academy of Colour Eyeshadow Palette – Bronze

If you’re looking for an eyeshadow palette that has several neutral or metallic shades, this is a good one. I bought this Academy of Colour palette around New Years, and used it for a lot of my night out looks. I think I paid around $12 for it, which is well worth it for the number of uses I’ve gotten out of it so far. I really like gold eyeshadow, so this palette was a must-have for me.

When using this palette, I usually start with Cave (top left) as a base and brush it all over my eye lid up to my brow. Then, depending on how bold I want my look to be, I either use Sunset (middle right) or Goddess (bottom left). Goddess is a little more dramatic, so I usually save that for bars and such. Truffle (middle left) is also good for going bold. When I use Sunset, I like to top it with Champagne (top middle) to give it a pinkish hue and some extra shimmer.

Overall, I’m very glad this palette caught my eye and I picked it up. If you like metallic eyeshadow, definitely check it out. I bought mine from Kohls, but I’m not sure if anywhere else carries it.

Why I Get Excited About Spring Makeup

There is a lot to love about spring. Great weather, flowers blooming, lots of baby animals, and the return of colors to the fashion world. Things get a little dark during the fall and winter (not that I’m complaining; I think gray might be one of my favorite colors), but when spring comes around, color starts to creep back in. This return of color is one of the things that excites me about spring makeup. Spring palettes give me a chance to step outside of my comfort zone and add a little color to my makeup routine.

Eyeshadow colors are one of my favorite things to play with during spring. Yesterday, I wore a light green eyeshadow instead of my normal nude/light gold look just because. The free Ulta palette I got in the bag I posted about a couple of weeks ago has several really cute spring colors. There is a pale shimmery pink that I have been wearing almost daily called Peony Bouquet. I am crazy about it, so if you’re in the market for something springy and simple, it’s definitely worth checking out. It also contains an off-white base, a light green, a lilac, a mauve, and a bronze color. I’m very excited to continue to play around with some spring combos and find one that works for me.

I also like spring lip colors. While at Ulta a couple of weeks ago, I was looking through their Color Rush Lip Gloss (which is probably one of my favorite gloss lines), and I picked up two. A mauve (Elizabeth) which is well within my comfort zone and I do really like, and then I got a brighter coral color (Audrey). Audrey is definitely not in my comfort zone, but I am challenging myself to wear it. I think stepping outside of your comfort zone is so important, because you may end up finding something you love.

If you’re having trouble finding ways to step outside of your comfort zone this spring, check out this lip gloss set from LORAC:

Or this spring eyeshadow palette that has a bunch of really pretty pastels and nudes:

Unpacking ULTA Freebies

I posted a few days ago about the freebies Ulta was giving away with purchase, so in true me fashion, I went up there and bought some makeup wipes and a couple of lip glosses, so I could get my free bag. It is so cute, and I got some really great stuff in it.

Look how cute! Even a couple of the palettes match! I wasn’t expecting to like the pink this much, because I’m not really a pink girl, but I really like it.

So, what did I get? Well, inside this adorable bag was:

  • Blush/bronzer palette
  • Eyeshadow palette with 6 adorable spring colors (I can’t wait to try these)
  • Blush brush
  • Lipstick in Pink Chocolate
  • Tinted Eye Primer in Peach Glow
  • Liquid Illuminator in Northern Lights (I’ve already tried it and I’m in love)
  • Plush Drama Volumizing Mascara
  • Clear Brow Shaping Gel
  • Juice Infused Lip Oil in Coconut (it smells amazing)
  • Dual-pencil sharpener
  • Lip Liner Pencil in Bittersweet
  • Mattifying Face Primer (always up for a good primer sample)
  • Eyeliner Pencil in Blackout
  • $5 off $15 coupon

One thing I love about Ulta’s gift bags is that they always give me things that are about to be in season. So far, I can’t think of anything I’ve gotten in one of their bags that I’ve been disappointed with. I haven’t been able to try everything out yet, but so far, my favorite thing is the liquid illuminator. It gives me a good highlight without being too bright, and it goes on really easily. Did anyone else go grab a freebie bag from Ulta? What was your favorite part of it?

Product Review – Tarte Double Duty Beauty Happy Girls Shine Brighter Eye and Cheek Palette

This weekend, I took advantage of a sale Ulta was having and bought a palette from Tarte that includes a blush, highlighter, four eyeshadow colors, and an eyeliner. It’s travel-sized, which was great because we spent the weekend with my husband’s parents in their cabin, so I didn’t want to take a ton of makeup with me. This palette has now become one of my favorite things.

The blush is a peachy pink color that looks great on most skin tones. It is pretty pigmented, so just get a little on your brush. The highlighter is a great pearlescent beige. I just wish the slot was a little bigger. I also love the eyeshadow shades because they combine well or look great on their own. I haven’t tried the eyeliner yet, because I forgot my brush, but I’m excited to try a powder eyeliner.

Tarte is usually an expensive brand, so I’ve been hesitant to try it, but I’m glad I did. It has definitely moved to my list of prestige brands I don’t mind paying for. Plus, I love that this palette comes in such a cute little compact! What are some prestige brands you’ve fallen for?

Holiday Party Makeup Guide

With the holidays in full swing, chances are, you’ve got at least one holiday party coming up. Whether it’s a work Christmas party, an ugly sweater party with friends, or a family get-together, it’s important to keep your makeup consistent with the party’s theme. Below are a few options that will look great, depending on how formal the gathering is.

Semi-formal Christmas Party

This year, my husband’s Christmas party for work is semi-formal. I’m planning to wear a long-sleeve, short black velvet dress with nude tights and flats. One of the great thing about little black dresses is that they give you more freedom for your makeup. Since black goes with everything, you don’t have to worry about your lip colors clashing with your dress. For a semi-formal affair, I suggest doing a deep red or berry-colored lipstick, a metallic eyeshadow, and a little darker blush than you would normally wear. You don’t want your eyeshadow to be too glittery, but a soft gold or silver will really make your eyes pop and dress up the whole outfit. For lip colors, you can choose from mauve, wine, deep red, or any other colors that will stand out, but still look professional. Either gloss or matte lip colors will work, but if there will be food and drink (which, is it really a party if there’s not?), I suggest matte, because matte lipsticks tend to stay on longer.

Ugly Sweater Party

Let’s face it, ugly Christmas sweaters are in. What’s more fun than digging through racks at Good Will to find the tackiest Christmas sweater you can find, pairing with jeans or leggings and cute boots, and partying with your friends? Since these tend to be more casual gatherings, I would go with a more natural look for your face and eyes, but dress it up with some red lipstick. Red lipstick can be formal or casual, and it’s great for a party like this, because it really adds to the festivities. Plus, it will look great in all those Instagram pictures you’ll be posting. For eyeshadows, choose matte nudes, rather than something sparkly. I like taupe and beige, but you can pretty much choose anything that won’t distract from the volume of your sweater.

Family Get-together

Family gatherings can be tricky, because it can be hard to know what the right attire is. I almost always choose nude lipsticks for family get-togethers, because if I don’t, inevitably someone will make a comment that I don’t care to hear, and the holidays are stressful enough as it is. My favorite nudes come from the NYX Lingerie Liquid collection, and they are only about $7 each. Corset is a little darker than I would normally wear, but I love the way it looks on me, and it would be great for a family party. While you may need to go nude on the lipstick, this doesn’t mean you can’t dress up your eyeshadow some. Mauves, browns, and deep violets are great eyeshadow colors to wear to family events, and they can be lightened easily, so you can get them to a shade where you feel comfortable. Don’t forget the contour and blush, because you know there will be family pictures at some point.

The most important thing to remember about these parties is have fun. Don’t stress too much about your makeup or what you’re wearing, because it’s all supposed to be a fun chance to dress up and do something a little different.
